OHIO ARTS COUNCIL POSITIONS ITSELF FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

During the Ohio Arts Council Fall Board meeting on September 24, the Council Board addressed the strategic direction of the agency given the drastically reduced budget for the FY2010/11 biennium. State support was slashed from $24.9 million two years ago to $13.1 for the biennium- a reduction of 47 percent.

With this challenge comes a need for strategic investment of state funds that will benefit the agency now and will also preserve prior investments in Ohio’s cultural infrastructure. The Board approved a plan to position the agency for a sustainable future while meeting the agency’s core priorities—organizational operating and project support, arts education and individual artists.

The budget reduction included a significant decrease in the administrative line for the agency requiring a reduction in the number of full-time employees in order to maintain a balanced budget. As a part of the restructuring, six full-time positions have been eliminated, reducing the agency’s current full-time staff from 26 to 20.

The six positions that will be eliminated are: communications specialist, fine arts administrator, grants assistant, two fine arts specialist/program coordinators and information technology supervisor.   The duties assigned to these positions will be condensed and redistributed to other employees with the necessary experience and expertise.

Over the last year and a half, the Ohio Arts Council has had to restructure its operations as state funding declined and staffing levels were reduced from 32 full-time to 20 full-time staff members.

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL ARTS & HUMANITIES MONTH!

The Ohio Arts Council joins hundreds of arts organizations and communities around the nation in celebrating National Arts & Humanities Month (NAHM) in October. NAHM has been celebrated since 1993 and provides a great opportunity for people to participate in the arts offered in their communities
The Ohio Arts Council partenered with the Statehouse to bring several National Arts & Humanities events to the Statehouse lawn.  In addition, a portion of the Accessible Expressions Ohio 2009 Exhibition & Tour, a program of VSA arts of Ohio, will be on display at the Statehouse October 5-30. The statewide tour of this juried visual art program is an opportunity for artists of all ages to demonstrate their abilities and promotes inclusive environments and advancement for people pursuing creative careers.

Ohio National Arts & Humanities Month events are organized with support from the Ohio Statehouse, Jazz Arts Group, OhioDance, Columbus Museum of Art and VSA arts of Ohio.

A visit to the Statehouse is also a good time to explore the People’s Art Collection. The artwork in the collection at the Statehouse depicts the hopes, dreams, values and aspirations of Ohioans - and commemorates Ohio’s accomplishments and struggles. With the support of the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education and the Ohio Arts Council the People's Art Collection created integrated lessons about the works of art found within the Ohio Statehouse and on Capitol Square. These resources are available for parents and teachers on the Statehouse Web site.

The Statehouse is just one place where Ohio citizens can discover and explore the arts in the Buckeye state during National Arts & Humanities Month and year round.

The Ohio Arts Council is encouraging arts organizations to schedule events in coordination with NAHM and also use ArtsinOhio.com to promote them. Organizations can register online for free and post their events to the Web site.

For more information or for suggestions of ways to celebrate the arts, visit the OAC Web site.
